Interface Provenance

/ˈɪntərfeɪs ˈprɒvənəns/
ETYMOLOGY

Latin interfacies (between faces) + French provenance (origin, from provenir — to come forth)

COINED BY

The Chromologium Archives

The traceable origin, authorship, and decision lineage of every design choice in a digital product—analogous to art provenance—establishing a verifiable chain of intentionality from design token to shipped pixel.

Every token, component, and layout decision carries metadata: who authored it, when it was last calibrated, which axiom it serves, and what perceptual test validated it. Provenance transforms ‘it looks good’ into ‘it is demonstrably correct.’

“A design without provenance is an opinion; a design with provenance is architecture.”
