Diegetic Interface
/daɪ.əˈdʒɛt.ɪk ˈɪn.tɚ.feɪs/
ETYMOLOGY
Greek diēgēsis (narrative, story) + Latin interfacies (surface between)
COINED BY
Fagerholt & Lorentzon / Formalized by Chromologium
A user interface entity that exists physically and spatially within the world of the artifact rather than superimposed as a detached, non-diegetic Heads-Up Display (HUD).
Enamel wells, brass chassis rivets, and physical registration crosses that anchor interface controls directly to the canvas plane, eliminating the cognitive dissonance of floating overlays.
“When an interface ceases to hover and begins to inhabit, the operator stops reading software and begins handling an instrument.”
