Before electronic microprocessors, engineers calculated complex multi-variable equations using nomograms—graphical alignment charts where placing a straightedge across graduated scales solved multi-dimensional physical problems instantly. By linking Maurice d'Ocagne's 1899 nomographic treatises, Massimo Vignelli's modernist canons, and Jan Tschichold's golden canons of page division, this monograph demonstrates that design token systems are modern mathematical nomograms.

1. The Lost Art of Graphical Calculation

In 1899, French mathematician Philbert Maurice d'Ocagne published 'Traité de Nomographie,' formalizing the science of calculating complex multi-variable functions through geometrical alignment charts. In a nomogram, three or more calibrated scales are arranged in spatial relationship: laying a straightedge across known values on scales A and B instantly intersects the exact computed value on scale C without performing algebraic calculations.

In 'The Form of the Book' (1991), Jan Tschichold revealed the secret golden canons of medieval manuscript design: precise geometric ratios (such as the 2:3 page ratio with text blocks bounded by diagonal harmonies) that govern both layout and margins with mathematical inevitability.

Similarly, Massimo Vignelli (2010) in 'The Vignelli Canon' insisted that typography and grid systems are structural skeletons that discipline visual chaos into timeless clarity. 3. Design Tokens as Multi-Dimensional Nomograms

When properly constructed, a design token architecture is a living, multi-dimensional computational nomogram. Instead of storing hardcoded CSS literals, tokens establish proportional alignment relationships:

Changing `--ds-font-size-base` automatically recomputes `--ds-line-height-body` and `--ds-spacing-flow` along a calibrated logarithmic curve.
