OphiuchusA constellation companion

Twelve equal calendar divisions; separate constellation sketches, not a continuous sky map. Star positions: Bright Star Catalogue / HEASARC. Data-use terms. Original connecting lines. Northern Hemisphere seasons.

01 / Origins

The year, given a material form.

Florence’s Baptistery carries a zodiac in white marble, green Prato serpentine and red marble. The cathedral’s record connects it to the near-identical pavement at San Miniato al Monte, dated 1207. At Dendera, a zodiac carved for a temple ceiling now belongs to the Louvre’s collection. These are particular objects, made in particular traditions, rather than one universal colour code.

The seasons in this edition follow the Northern Hemisphere. The rooms and material trays are imagined interpretations; the historical works remain linked source records.

Beyond the twelve

The constellation
the zodiac leaves out.

The Sun crosses Ophiuchus, but neither equal-sign zodiac adds a thirteenth sign. Read the dates, the atlas and the distinction.

03 / Through the year

One Sun.
Two starting points.

The tropical zodiac begins at the March equinox. The Lahiri sidereal zodiac applies an offset for precession. Both have twelve equal 30° signs; neither is a map of the IAU constellation boundaries.

Solar sign intervals beginning in 2026. Dates are UTC; each interval ends at the next ingress.
